  • Description

Breaking the Spanish Barrier is part of the acclaimed language series that engages students of all levels, giving them all the tools needed to find success on the path to fluency.  First published in 1997, this series is now used throughout the country in high schools, colleges, and middle schools as well as by homeschool families and adult learners.

In this Level II book, ideal for intermediate students, the present, preterite and imperfect are reviewed before presenting the future, the conditional, compound tenses, as well as commands and an introduction to the subjunctive mood (after indirect commands and verbs of emotion).  Essential grammar topics are covered including comparisons, demonstratives, pronouns, “por” and “para,” definite and indefinite articles, and many more!  Hundreds of exercises reinforce the amazing explanations offered by one of the country’s leading language teachers. As a special feature, all even chapters feature a rip-roaring adventure series, reminiscent of old-fashioned radio, recorded by native speakers with sound effects and music. Comprehension questions follow each episode.

Vocabulary, grammar, and cultural information are presented in this new Breaking the Barrier iPad version in a way that can only be called revolutionary.  Combining the brilliant instructional features of the iPad with the winning approach developed by acclaimed teacher John Conner, dean of faculty at Groton School and former member of the AP Test Development Committee, this groundbreaking iPad version of the series is just what any language learner needs to excel.

I love these Breaking the Barrier books! I’ve come to expect the free annual updates to the interactive maps, cultural information, and country data, but the new features – well, wow! The "Vamos a ver," grammar lessons, voiced and with motion graphics, are good learning devices and create added interest. Who needs a blackboard or whiteboard? Also, the amount of aural reinforcement is wonderful. In addition to the vocabulary lists, flash cards, and cultural readings, every single Spanish sentence is now recorded by a native speaker. ¡Increíble! And speaking of reinforcement, the plentiful practice exercises which can be instantly "corrected," are terrific as always.

John Conner’s Breaking the Barrier series provides the perfect 1-2-3 path to fluency. 1. The grammar is organized in a coherent, logical manner that stays with the learner beyond the study period. 2. The vocabulary lessons keep leaners engaged. 3. The cultural articles, beautiful layout, and phenomenal accompanying pieces bring the 1-2 punch of grammar and vocabulary to life. BTB breaks down the fundamentals of learning a foreign language into easy to tackle steps. The trust path to fluency for learners of all environments and ages.

This book is an incredible way to learn Spanish rather quickly. It provides not only useful vocabulary, but also the right amount of grammer. I have used Rosetta Stone, and it has nothing on this product.

Started as a total beginner that knew “Hola,” to someone that can speak after completing the series! Highlights: 1. Vocabulary: Each chapter has vocabulary flashcards that you can use to easily memorize the words related to the theme of the chapter. Know a word? click the green check mark. otherwise, you just toss it back in the pile and try again. 2. Grammar: Each chapter emphasizes a particular aspect of sentence structure. The start of the book begins with the present tense. Later chapters teach you the preterite (past tense) and the imperfect tense. 3. Cultural information: Each chapter focuses on a country from Latin America. There are beautiful pictures and information about prominent culture figures. A must purchase for $14.99!
