Description

A riverboat captain named Marlow receives a simple assignment: to float upriver, deep into the heart of the colonized Congo, and find a wayward ivory trader named Kurtz. Yet the job is much more than it seems. Life in the jungle has transformed Kurtz into a sick, dangerous, ambitious, and manipulative man, and the search to find him begins to weigh heavily on Marlow's soul.

Conrad's language is dense, precious, and at times frightening. Although by now we all know the story about imperialism being evil, Conrad was one of the first to tell it. Also, he goes deeper--instead of just condemning the imperialists, he questions what it is within people that allows them to commit acts of evil. And what about the Congo is dark, really?
