Description

Mark Steyn's New York Times bestseller, After America, is now in paperback! Featuring a new introduction and updated throughout, After America takes on Obama's disastrous plan for our nation, and reveals exactly what a post-American world will look like if we don't change our ways soon. Says Steyn: "Nothing is certain but debt and taxes. And then more debt. If the government of the United States had to use GAAP (the 'Generally Accepted Accounting Practices' that your company and the publisher of this book have to use), Uncle Sam would be under an SEC investigation and his nephews and nieces would have taken away the keys and cut up his credit card." Slim as it is, however, Steyn argues there is still hope. "Americans face a choice: you can rediscover the animating principles of the American idea—of limited government, a self-reliant citizenry, and the opportunities to exploit your talents to the fullest—or you can join most of the rest of the western world in terminal decline. This is a battle for the American idea, and it's an epic one, but you can do anything you want to do. So do it." Bitingly funny and wickedly clever, After America is Mark Steyn at his best.

  • Fantastic Book

Mark Steyn is not only a brilliant thinker, he is also a brilliant writer. He not only has a beautiful command of the English language, he has an enormous amount of knowledge and perspective. It is not easy to read about America's decline and possible or probable fall, but it is a book that is not easy to put down once started. Those who denigrate what Mr. Steyn writes, will, I am sure, live to regret those feelings - if they are still around.

The cover page seemed promising, then it went downhill from there. If I'd wanted to read a diatribe against the Obama administration, replete with vulgarity, I'd have read something from Rush L, or tuned in to Fox "News". I'm sorry I wasted my money.

I guess all people on the right are negative Debbie downers. Every time a democrat is elected republicans scream "it's the end of the world!!" and "we need one of our guys back in office right now!" get real. Where was this "the sky is falling" crap back in 2008?

Great read! Tells the true story of how and why people in the US are becoming bludgeoned by our own stupidity. The anointed one(Obama) and his worthless cronies are appealing to those who can no longer have the guts to do something to make their lives better. The sheep they have now become are just wandering and waiting for someone else to take care of them. Take for example, inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and those who feel their rights are to $400.00 dollar cell phones and houses they cannot remotely afford. Since when did anyone have those rights? They buy these things with redistributed money and do not stop to think, "maybe I should buy healthcare coverage for my family?" what a crock. It is politicians like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd who should be going to prison for extended lengths of time for what they did to the housing market. The author is correct, if we do not change the leadership this year we will slide into an abyss this country will not be able to get out of. I read a quote the other day that truly frightens me for my children. "when the number of people working for a living is outnumbered by those who vote for a living then we are destined for destruction.

The tell-tale signs are here. If you care at all about tomorrow you should at least read the prologue. Then just try putting it down.
  • Not for everyone!!!

Poorly written narrative consisting of predominantly extremist views and skewed analysis that some will view as being slightly deranged. If I picked up this book without the cover I would assume Anders Breivik wrote it. Between all the rants there are a couple of decent insights and explanations. Expect no more than that.

An impressive view of the reality of America and Western nations rather than the willful ignorance of the statists bent on bankrupting the world. Steyn does not cover his eyes and expects the same from the people who still believe in liberty in America, still the last great hope on Earth, but for how long? Combining wit and analysis, Steyn has provided the treatise that is the anti-Left, the anti-Obama. Hopefully America will rediscover its greatness and avoid the fate of empires in history.

Mark is one of the better writers out there as far as putting together facts and making them digestable. I like his style and the fact that he can take devestatingly depressing info and find some sarcastic humor in it. I only wish he would fill in for Rush more often.
