Description

“Here is a man who suffers so his readers can laugh.” — Daily Telegraph

Bill Bryson travels to Kenya in support of CARE International. All royalties and profits go to CARE International.

Bryson visits Kenya at the invitation of CARE International, the charity dedicated to eradicating poverty. Kenya is a land of contrasts, with famous game reserves and a vibrant culture. It also provides plenty to worry a traveller like Bill Bryson, fixated as he is on the dangers posed by snakes, insects and large predators. It is also a country with many serious problems: refugees, AIDS, drought, and grinding poverty. The resultant diary, though short in length, contains the trademark Bryson stamp of wry observation and curious insight.

Reviews

  • Not a book but a fundraiser for care

Not sure why Bryson was part of this scam. This is a fund raising appeal for CARE. You make your "donation" when you buy the book which is not a book but a pr piece. Very disappointed that Bryson was involved.

I wish it could have been longer. I was expecting a whole book and was surprised to only get a chapter and a thank you for my donation to CARE. although pleased to be able to donate to this worthy cause, I was a little bit peeved that the nature of the piece was not made clear. As usual, Bryson's wit and description softened the minor irritation. Don't expect a full book.

While I am a big Bill Bryson fan, I was a bit disappointed by this book. It was written in his wonderfully enchanting style, but is no where close in length to his novels. Do not be confused. You are not buying a full length book.
